Graduate Studies for P-12 Educators
Concordia University’s Master of Science Degree in Educational Leadership is designed for professional educators who are seeking advanced professional training for positions in P-12 schools. The nationally accredited School of Education at Concordia University provides a curriculum aligned with the Michigan Standards and the three point mission of the School of Education to prepare professional educators who are servant leaders, reflective practitioners, and committed to life-long learning.
The study of Educational Leadership, a core curriculum of 12 credit hours in foundational studies, begins the program. Then students may choose from three concentrations:
Administration - for current and aspiring principals and superintendents. (31 credits)
Curriculum and Instruction - for educators who are seeking to improve and develop new instructional classroom skills. (31 credits)
Religious Education Studies - for educators who are seeking to teach or direct religious studies programs. Also qualifies Lutheran educators for the Lutheran Teaching Diploma and makes them eligible to enter the roster of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. (36 credits)
Program Highlights The program accommodates busy practicing educators and prepares practitioners by focusing on practical professional training grounded in theory. The action research practiced throughout the program culminates with a research project that provides real world training in school improvement. This format is designed to allow graduate students in Administration or Curriculum and Instruction to complete all course work in two academic years. The Religious Education Studies concentration with 36 credits requires an additional semester to complete.
Flexible Format The School of Education offers an accelerated graduate program to local teachers and educators on Concordia’s Ann Arbor campus and at many off site locations throughout the State of Michigan. Cohort groups take a preset sequence of graduate courses at a convenient location, a local school or district service building classroom, arranged specifically by Concordia University. The accelerated graduate courses are offered consecutively during Concordia’s fall, spring, and summer semesters with three credit courses scheduled in eight week blocks. A study break is typically scheduled in July and August.
Accreditation The School of Education at Concordia University has been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Michigan Department of Education for the preparation of educational personnel.
Advising An advisor from the School of Education will assist with students in developing a plan of study, program completion, and meeting all degree requirements.

“I can honestly say I walked away with invaluable learning from each and every course. I have regularly referred back to everything from legal issues in special education to teacher evaluation forms. I have reflected heavily on the Leadership and Principalship classes as I have suggested new programs to celebrate successes in the building and offered a different perspective, that of a very recent classroom teacher, to our administration.”
